Elementary age Math, Home Ed, History and more

Home Economics has been downplayed as to its importance in public school and the homeschool. However, it should have its place in our homeschool curriculum, whether that is a boxed curriculum, or custom-made according to the order of your family life. Large families often require their older children to start taking over many household responsibilities at young ages. But whatever your family does, your children need to know how to cook and clean because eventually they will need to use those skills within their own homes.

Homeschool math curriculum choices are vast. Saxon homeschool Math program is laid out and ready for mom to use. Math U See is becoming another popular curriculum homeschoolers are using. Then there are workbooks, which most children enjoy because of the illustrations and coloring activities. However, some elementary-aged children will speed along at a wonderful pace until they reach learning their multiplication tables. Do not be concerned if you find you need to lay those fact lessons aside for a time. Children’s brains all develop at different rates. One may need more time to process math facts, while others may beg to do more pages per day.

History comes alive to children when historically accurate books are read using different voices and intonations. Do not be afraid to do this with your children! They will absolutely beg for more! They love the interactive voices; it makes the story seem real to them. Once you read these books, then look for videos of them. It is recommended to read the books first for accuracy because films, especially produced by Hollywood, tend to compromise the truth for drama. Videos can help the children see the context better, especially if some books do not give a lot of illustrations.

Handwriting, grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation are easily incorporated into the above lessons by using words, sentences etc. from the sources you are already using, thus covering the full spectrum of Language Arts without adding any extra books or curriculum to your shelves.

There are so many different things to incorporate into your homeschool that will make it more fun and a more saturated learning environment. Discover what works for your family and enjoy homeschooling your elementary-aged children.
